OBSTETRICAL

Obstetrical care is the medical practice of caring for women and their baby’s health through several stages of motherhood, beginning with prenatal care and ending with postnatal care.

GYNECOLOGICAL

Gynecological services include  a wide range of preventive care services such as pap smears, STI testing, pelvic exams, ultrasounds, and blood work.

SURGICAL

Gynecologic surgery is surgery on any part of a woman’s reproductive system, including the vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. 


IN-OFFICE PROCEDURES

In-office procedures streamline the process for both diagnosis and treatment of many common gynecologic issues like abnormal pap smears, heavy periods, urinary incontinence and birth control.

Understanding how to care for yourself and your baby during pregnancy is an important part of motherhood! Dr. Woodus provides comprehensive prenatal care for women in the Southern Dallas region from regular exams to diet counseling and all other aspects of women’s healthcare during pregnancy.

At Woodus Obstetrics & Gynecology, we recognize the weeks following birth are a critical period for new mothers and their newborns. We recommend an initial postpartum assessment no later than two weeks after delivery. We place great emphasis on a comprehensive postpartum program that includes assessment of the physical, social, and psychological well-being of our mothers. Attention to the fourth trimester is a key aspect of comprehensive obstetrical care. Our services and support are tailored to meet each individual woman’s needs.

Sonographic evaluation is an important aspect of routine of obstetrical care. We typically perform OB ultrasounds at the following times: confirmation of pregnancy between 6-10 weeks of gestation, anatomy evaluation between 18-20 weeks of gestation, third trimester growth ultrasound around 36 weeks of gestation. Obstetrical ultrasounds may also be performed at other times as clinically indicated. 

Periodic laboratory evaluations during pregnancy also provide a means to assess health and well-being during the gestation period. Routine labs are typically drawn as follows: New OB labs, genetic screening labs, 24-28 week labs, GBS screening. Additional labs may also be performed as clinically indicated.

GYNECOLOGICAL SERVICES

At Woodus Obstetrics and Gynecology we are committed to improving obstetrical outcomes. Preconception health education and optimization are an important piece of this puzzle. This visit also includes risk assessments and identifies interventions that are crucial in improving perinatal outcomes.

Our office provides basic fertility treatment including evaluation, diagnosis, and management for those experiencing difficulty conceiving or carrying a pregnancy to term.

This is a great opportunity to accomplish many goals based upon age and health. We encourage yearly Well Woman examinations for all of our patients.

The yearly exam will include the following steps:

  • General physical exam
  • Pelvic exam (pap smear if needed)
  • Updates on needed immunizations
  • Updates on certain medications
  • Contraceptive planning (if needed)
  • Preventative health screening
  • A thorough review of your life and work situation and any changes that have occurred since your last visit
The adolescent period provides the perfect time frame to focus on health education and preventive services. These visits focus on body awareness, Sexual health, STD prevention, HPV prevention, and prevention of unintended pregnancies. We take special care with our youngest patients to help facilitate a relationship that will guide them through many important times in their lives.
Treatment & Evaluation of Pap Smears A Pap smear (or Pap test) is an evaluation of cells from the cervix. The practice allows a gynecologist to detect changes that may indicate precancerous conditions or cervical cancer.

Abnormal periods impact many women at various stages. This condition can lead to a very poor quality of life and may be an indication of greater concern for your health.We offer a wide range of treatment options based upon the diagnostic findings of each individual evaluation for a truly individualized plan of care.

There are many different options for women who are considering birth control. We individualize each patient’s health and goals to arrive at the best option for her. We offer a wide range of options including: barrier birth control, birth control pills, vaginal ring, contraceptive patch, injectable contraceptives, contraceptive rod, IUDs; as well as permanent contraceptive options. In addition, we also offer emergency contraception options which reduces the chance of pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus that is contracted through sexual contact. It can lead to genital warts and cervical cancer. Today, more than 20 million men and women in the United States are infected with HPV. Our office provides recommendations for vaccination and treatment of symptoms caused by HPV.
We offer a complete range of STD testing for women. This includes testing for Human papilloma virus (HPV), herpes (HSV), Gonorrhea (GC), Chlamydia (Chl), Trichomonas, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Syphilis, and Hepatitis. Patients do not need to be embarrassed or frightened to ask for STD testing. We offer this testing to patients every single day and we welcome every patient to request this testing. Screening for these diseases can save a patient’s life.
Fibroids are the most common noncancerous pelvic tumors in women. By age 50, 50-80% of all women will be affected by uterine fibroids. Fibroids can cause a variety of symptoms from none at all; to fertility concerns, menstrual disorders, pelvic pain, and urinary and bowel issues. We strive to educate our patients regarding the diagnosis and treatment options for this condition. We are prepared to offer all levels of management for uterine fibroids from medical to surgical management when indicated. Our goal is to seek the least invasive and most effective method of treatment for each patient.

Dr. Woodus provides diagnostic and treatment assistance for ovarian dysfunction, including the following:

  • Primary Ovarian Insufficiency/ Premature Ovarian Failure – loss of ovarian function before the age of 40.
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) – a hormonal imbalance caused by higher-than-normal amounts of male hormones. The condition leads to menstrual irregularity and difficulty achieving pregnancy.
  • Ovarian Cysts – fluid-filled sacs or pockets in or on the surface of the ovary.
PMS/PMDD Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a group of symptoms that women may experience during their routine menstrual cycle due to hormone changes. Oftentimes routine behavior modifications may help alleviate these symptoms. Occasionally, symptoms may be severe, refractory to routine behavior modifications, and interfere with daily activities. In these instances, medication could be necessary.
Menopause is a natural biological process. This transition includes a natural decline in the production of reproductive hormones when a woman reaches her 40s and 50s. Menopause itself is a point in time 12 months after a woman’s last period. Menopause can cause many changes in your body as a result of decreased hormone production from your ovaries. Oftentimes the symptoms a woman may experience during the menopausal transition can be managed through behavior modification techniques. Occasionally, symptoms may be severe, refractory to routine behavior modifications, and interfere with daily activities. In these instances, medication could be necessary.

This is a noninvasive diagnostic exam that produces images that are used to assess organs and structures within the female pelvis (specifically the uterus, the ovaries, and the Fallopian tubes). The examination can be performed by transabdominal or transvaginal approach.
Attention to the screening and prevention of gynecological cancers is a crucial aspect of the routine well woman exam. Our office employs the following measures: routine breast and pelvic exam, compliance with the American Cancer Society mammography screening guidelines, HPV vaccination, Pap test, HPV test, and risk reduction through the recognition and early evaluation of warning signs.

SURGICAL SERVICES

Endometrial ablation is a procedure that surgically destroys (ablates) the lining of your uterus (endometrium).The procedure is used to treat many causes of heavy bleeding with the goal of reducing menstrual flow.
Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose or treat problems of the uterus. The procedure requires a hysteroscope, which is a thin, lighted telescope-like device, that is inserted into the uterus through the cervix. Hysteroscopy is often used to evaluate & treat abnormal bleeding, as a component of infertility evaluations, localize an IUD, or perform sterilization procedures.
This is a minimally invasive surgical technique that can be used to treat a variety of gynecological problems including permanent birth control, endometriosis, uterine fibroid treatment, treatment of ovarian cyst, and hysterectomy. Patients can look forward to reduced postoperative pain, less significant scarring, and a faster return to daily activities following minimally invasive surgery.
Sterilization is a permanent form of birth control that is extremely effective at preventing pregnancy.
Ovarian Cysts are fluid-filled sacs or pockets in or on the surface of the ovary.
Oophorectomy is the surgical removal of an ovary of ovaries.
Uterine polyps are an overgrowth or finger-like projection of the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus (endometrium).
Endometriosis is a painful disorder in which the tissue that forms the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterine cavity.

Endometrial biopsy is a medical procedure in which a tissue sample is taken from the lining of the uterus (endometrium) for evaluation and diagnosis of certain gynecological conditions.
Colposcopy is a medical diagnostic procedure performed to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva for signs of disease.
This is a medical procedure performed to remove abnormal cells from the cervix and prevent cervical cancer.
The Intrauterine devices are long-term, reversible, highly effective birth control methods.
This contraceptive rod is a long-term, reversible, highly effective birth control method.
